What should you check before enabling automation?

Use these practical checks to clarify your rules, data and responsibilities before a connection goes live.

A strategy checklist beside historical test assumptions

Begin with a rule you can explain

A useful strategy outline states what produces a signal, when an order may be submitted and which conditions prevent it. Write down the market, time window and any exceptions. If two people reading the outline would act differently, the rule needs more work before automation. Testing can reveal inconsistencies in an implementation, but it cannot repair a trading idea that has not been defined. Keep a dated copy of each agreed revision.

A pre-connection review

Work through these items with the person who will monitor the account.

  • Write down every entry and exit condition
  • Record the source and period of test data
  • Check supported broker permissions
  • Set and review available position limits
  • Test how alerts reach the responsible person
  • Decide when execution should be paused

Five terms worth defining together

Signal

An event produced when configured strategy conditions are met; it is not necessarily a completed order.

Order

An instruction sent toward a broker, subject to permissions, validation and market conditions.

Slippage

The difference between an expected execution price and the price actually obtained.

Drawdown

A decline measured from a prior value or high point over a defined period.

Paper trading

A simulated trading exercise that does not place orders using real money.

Mistakes that obscure the record

MythOne strong test is enough

FactA single selected period may hide sensitivity to different conditions. Record the period and assumptions, and examine how the rules behave elsewhere.

MythA submitted order is a filled order

FactSubmission, broker acceptance and execution are different events. Review their timestamps and statuses separately when examining a trade.

MythAlerts can wait until later

FactDecide who receives connection and limit alerts before live use. An unread notification is not operational oversight.

What this material cannot decide for you

These resources explain software concepts and preparation steps. They do not assess whether trading, a particular strategy or a specific broker is appropriate for you. Costs, available integrations and order handling can change, so verify current terms with the relevant provider. If your question concerns personal finances or legal obligations, seek appropriately qualified independent advice. For a software question, send us the feature and market involved without sharing passwords or account identifiers.
